An Out of this World Selfie

Astronaut Space Selfie

Chances are that you can’t open your Facebook without seeing someone (and in all probability a great deal more than one person) pouting for the camera in the ubiquitous ‘selfie’ and usually accompanied by a lot of words regarding their appearance preceded by ‘#’. Even the Oxford Online Dictionary is getting in on the act declaring ‘selfie’ to be the word of 2013 – as if people needed more encouragement.  So it is refreshing to see a genuinely cool selfie, yep, there is such a thing.

This image is a selfie taken by Mike Hopkins, a NASA flight engineer who was given the task of helping to change out a faulty water pump on the International Space Station. Whilst managing in the dangerous environment of open space – oh yes, I’ve seen Gravity, it is lethal out there – he snapped a quick picture with the whole planet behind him.

Well you can’t blame him for taking the opportunity and, even if he is pouting inside that space helmet, he still has to rank as one of the coolest people out there.

About the Author:

I am a professional Creative ~ Photographer, Videographer, Cinematographer and Drone Pilot My professional photographic career started at the tender age of 13 when I won my first commission to photograph an art collection by a local artist. It paid £50 which was reasonable money for an ambition 13 year old in 1978. I have continued to take pictures ever since, and quite simply, I couldn’t be happier! I am professionally qualified with the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP).
